Blue Poison Arrow Frog

The blue poison arrow frog’s scientific name is Dendrobates azureus.  Scientific names almost always mean something important about the animal.

Kids’ word meanings:

  • Dendro = tree
  • bates = frog
  • azureus = blue

 

Adults’ etymology:

  • Dendro – from dendron,  Greek for tree
  • bates – from batraxos,  Greek for frog
  • azureus – Latin derived from Persian, meaning a deep blue color like Lapis Lazuli

All together, this frog’s name means “deep blue tree frog”.  What a great name!
